Salinas churchgoers support children in rural El Salvador

When a team of Salinas-area residents heads to rural El Salvador this winter, it has a new and welcome challenge to face. After 18 years of paying for children’s school supplies, uniforms and meals so they can attend the region’s tiny school each year, the group has seen changes in the educational system of the farming communities surrounding Guillermo Ungo. Instead of stopping at sixth grade, the children of the villages now can complete high school and vocational training. Now, students whose parents never dreamed of attending college are talking about it, and their Central Coast sponsors are working on ways to help. After El Salvador’s brutal 12-year civil war ended in 1992, Santa Cruz al Salvador — which means “Holy Cross of our Savior” — formed in Santa Cruz County as a Lutheran mission. Its members send donations and make annual trips to the area, helping provide safe drinking water, basic medical services and schooling.
