The San Joaquin Valley — often dubbed the meth capital of the nation — needs more residential programs to help addicts and improved public awareness campaigns, especially targeting the youth, to force more community involvement, says a new report recently released. Among four broad suggestions made by California State University, Fresno is a call for more residential treatment facilities that address the needs of women with children, adolescents and the gay and lesbian population who are at risk.

A county process to negotiate compensation to the community for Waste Management’s Kettleman Hills landfill expansion project has carried over into the new year. Consultants are now asking the Local Assessment Committee to extend the time to come up with a set of recommendations by mid-February. With it, they are also seeking a contract extension.

The Hanford Mall in some ways is a mirror of the nation’s ailing retail sector, which has seen its worst holiday season in decades. The mall finished 2008 with mixed results, with some stores selling more than in 2007, but most others doing worse. Store managers in struggling stores blamed the recession for weaker sales.

But the news has mostly been bad, with many companies closing amid the worst economic time in a generation. The retail sector, one of the biggest industries in the county, will be hit hard with the scheduled closure of Mervyns, a long-time tenant of Hanford Mall. The company plans to shutter its doors after the holiday season, a major blow to the retail environment in Kings County.
